Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, World Heritage site in Alberta, Canada.
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a buffalo jump located where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains begin to rise from the prairie.
It was used by indigenous peoples of the plains for over 5,500 years to kill buffalo by driving them off the 11 metre high cliff.
The site bears witness to a custom practiced by native people of the North American plains for nearly 6,000 years.
The interpretive centre built into the ancient sandstone cliffs features exhibits on the natural history and culture of the area.
The name 'Head-Smashed-In' does not refer to the death of the buffalo as one might think, but to a young brave who wanted to watch the buffalo plunge off the cliff up close and was found dead under the pile of carcasses.
