Originally built as a fortress in the late 12th to 13th century under Philip II, the Louvre was transformed into a royal palace in the 14th century.
It is home to thousands of works of art, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.
The museum is open every day except Tuesday and certain holidays.
The Louvre's glass pyramid entrance, designed by I. M. Pei, is one of its most distinctive features.
